Orphan Gold Mine
Former Producing Gold Mine
Orphan Gold Mine is one of Mantis’ signature properties and is 100% owned by Mantis. Mantis’ exploration of the former producer has demonstrated that the mine has the potential to host a significant gold resource.
The Orphan gold property encompasses 11-claims covering 384-hectares and includes the Orphan Mine. The property borders the east boundary of the Foisey Gold System. The Orphan Main Vein is a northwest trending gold zone which occurs at the southeast margins of the Kaby Lake stock.
From 1934 to 1935 the Orphan mine produced 2,460-ounces of gold and 1,558-ounces of silver from 3,525 tons of ore mined from the Main Vein. This ore yielded an exceptionally high average gold grade of 0.67 ounces per ton. Although, mine development included the sinking of a 265-foot deep shaft and the establishment of the 150-level (47-meter) and 250-level (76-meter), the mine was never brought to production largely due to management operational issues.
The Main Vein at the Orphan Mine was explored in 2008 by a limited diamond drill program consisting of eight holes totaling 1,312-meters. The drill holes probed the vein along a 255-meter strike length to a depth of 135-meters. A summary of the drill intersections is tabled in the following link.
See Orphan Drill Intersection Chart
Significantly, all of the holes which targeted the Main Vein intersected the vein and or structure, with the exception of hole OMV08-7 which was abandoned due to drilling problems. Hole OMV08-6 was drilled on another northwest trending vein structure 130-meters north of the Main Vein. Anomalous gold values were encountered.
The former producing mine is located, in northwestern Ontario approximately 230-kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay and 50-kilometers west of Geraldton, in Rickaby township. Geologically, the property is situated in the Onaman-Tashota belt, historically included with the Beardmore-Geraldton greenstone belt which generated over 4-million ounces of gold from 19-producing mines.
Mantis’ future plans for the property include another drill campaign to test the vein below 135-meter level to provide a foundation from which to develop a gold resource. Beyond the drilling of the Main Vein, Mantis plans to explore the north sector of the property for related sub-parallel veins.
