Thorburn Base Metal Project
A base metal target within the Kidd-Munroe assemblage
The Thorburn property, 100% owned by Mantis, was one of the original properties acquired by Mantis. The property is located in Thorburn township, 40-kilometers northwest of the city of Timmins and consists of 24-claims totaling 2,768-hectares. Geologically the property lies at the western extent of the Abitibi greenstone belt, which is one of the most productive and prolific mining areas in the world, containing the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake gold camps, as well as several important base metal mines.
The giant Kidd Creek massive sulphide base metal deposit, which contained in excess of 135-million tons of ore is situated 21-kilometers to southeast of the property. The volcanic succession that hosts this deposit strikes northwestward through the Thorburn property. Four airborne electromagnetic geophysical anomalies, rated high priority are located within this assemblage on Mantis’ ground.
In past studies of groundwater chemistry within the Mantis’ claim block, exceedingly high concentrations of sulphate were recorded by the Ontario Geological Survey.
This sulphate anomaly is important because in the underlying Precambrian bedrock the primary form of aqueous sulphur is sulphate and the most probable source of sulphate is from the oxidation of metallic sulphides. This would indicate that a high sulphide source such as a massive sulphide body is responsible for generating this anomaly.
Mantis is planning to undertake a deep penetrating, high resolution electromagnetic survey (VTEM) of the property in-conjunction with a high resolution MMI soil geochemical survey. The results of these surveys will advance the property to a drill stage scheduled for the winter of 2008-2009.
